Etymology and history
This sign is formed by tapping the BSL letter M twice, for mother. Tapping the side of your head twice with three letters (for the letter M) extended is an acceptable variation. The signs for mum and mother are often used interchangeably. Some signers will use the head-tapping version for mummy. A further variation is used with all four fingers extended, instead of three, in both the head-tapping and palm-tapping variations. This version may be easier for babies and small children as it requires less hand dexterity.
